Live United in Marion County
By United Way of Marion County
Jun 3, 2009, 15:48
United Way of Marion County is inviting Marion County residents to LIVE UNITED with several unique opportunities. Locals can opt for stuffing a school bus full of school supplies for Marion County children who could otherwise not afford them or hammer away their stress while building a home for Habitat for Humanity on June 20th. It’s all part of United Way Education Initiative and Day of Action.
The “Stuff the Bus” campaign is a month-long effort to gather school supplies to help youngsters become ready to learn. Many families struggle with the extra cost of items their children need to start the new school year. These children begin classes at a disadvantage, either doing without the needed supplies or borrowing from others. In an effort to LIVE UNITED and further the ability for children to reach their potential, Marion County residents are invited to buy extra items and donate them to the cause.
Drop off locations include: Marion Star, Marion Community Credit Union and the United Way of Marion County.
School supplies needed include: 8 count Crayola crayons, 24 count Crayola crayons, 8 count Crayola washable markers, # 2 pencils, box of colored pencils, plastic crayon/pencil box, pink erasers, yellow highlighter, Fiskars scissors, 4 oz. Elmer’s white school glue, 8 oz. Elmer’s white school glue, spiral notebooks, notebook paper, 12x18 white drawing paper, Two-pocket folders, 3 ring binders and 12” ruler (centimeters/inches).
Also, United Way of Marion County is celebrating the 2009 national Day of Action by partnering with Habitat of Humanity on June 20th to help families to build their own homes. This year the construction will take place at 384 North State Street in Marion. Call the United Way office to reserve a place and a free LIVE UNITED t-shirt in your size. Bring a pair of gloves and a hammer. Other tools will be available, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own tool boxes as well.
Volunteers may participate all day or on the following shifts:
8:30 am – 11:30 am
11:30 am – 1:30 pm
1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
United Way of Marion County is working to advance the common good by focusing on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life – a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health.
