According to eyewitness reports, two men posing as college students are going door to door in the Marion area reportedly asking people to purchase magazine subscriptions and make donations to help finance a student trip to Europe.
The two men allegedly mentioned being Ohio State students and have asked checks be made out to Coast to Coast Sales. According to Karen Ream, Director of Community Relations and Development at Ohio State Marion, there is no known Ohio State University fundraising project that has students out selling magazines and asking for checks to be made out to Coast to Coast Sales.
Reports of the scam are nationwide, and were recently reported to university administration and law enforcement officers in Marion, Ohio. University officials urge people to contact the Marion County Sheriff’s Department if someone claims to be from Ohio State and tries a similar soliciting tactic in your neighborhood.
Reports from the Marion scam have people being approached by two young men, one caucasian, one African-American. The Marion County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating reports of the scam locally.
