The Dr. Glen Burton Memorial Fund has been established at Marion Community Foundation, announced MCF president Brad Bebout. This designated fund started with a series of memorial contributions and grew into a fund -- for the benefit of Marion’s Prairie Parks.

Commencing in 2009, the Burton Fund will award an annual grant to the Prairie Parks Foundation. The grant shall be used for the development, care, maintenance, and improvement of the Marion Tallgrass Prairie Trail. This trail is part of a rails-to-trails project which will provide residents of the Marion area with an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, cycling and fishing, among others. It is being developed under the leadership of Parks Director Karen Kelly in western Marion County near the intersection of State Route 95 and Herr Road.

”Donors who wish to support a specific agency or cause can establish a designated fund,” explains Bebout. “The Burton Fund joins the Don Alspach Memorial Fund in supporting the Trail project.” The Alspach Fund will support the construction and maintenance of a trailhead facility and nature center.

According to Bebout, the children of Dr. Glen Burton, Jr. created this fund to honor their father’s memory and to support outdoor activities which were important to him in his lifetime. It is their hope that other individuals, organizations, and corporations will add to the Fund in support of this worthy cause.

The Burton Fund is one of 87 funds under the stewardship of Marion Community Foundation. Marion Community Foundation has served as a philanthropic clearinghouse for the communities of Marion County for the past 10 years, with a total fund value of $16 million. Additional information is available by contacting MCF during standard business hours at 387-9704 or online at www.marioncommunityfoundation.org.
