The Wayne & Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery at Ohio State Marion will display the artwork of two uniquely talented central Ohio artists throughout the remainder of the summer, “Landscapes and More” by Jim Fought and “The Mandalas” by Barbara Stover.
“Landscapes and More” features a series of watercolor landscapes on canvas by Delaware, Ohio resident and artist Jim Fought. Fought’s work will be on display July 19 through August 6.

During his 25 years as a self taught artist, Fought has taken part in a multitude of shared art exhibitions through the Central Ohio Water Color Spring and Fall Show, Schumaker Gallery at Capital University, Upper Arlington Lutheran Church, Delaware Artist Guild and others. According to Fought, this is only his second independent exhibition.

“I was very thrilled to get a chance to have a one man show.” said Fought.

“I am hoping to find a new area that people can see my work. If they like it they can buy it or order something from me, just to get my name out a little more,” he explained

A majority of his work is inspired by his surroundings, shared Fought.

“My stuff is realism,” he said. “It is not photo realism. I allowed a few quarks to make it a little more painterly.”

“When you are looking at a barn you can tell it is a barn,” he added.

“One thing that you can call it is just Americana,” stated Fought, “small farms, family run farms and that kind of stuff, and the Amish people. That doesn’t take care of all the stuff I do, but that takes care of a good deal of it.”

Fought has also drawn inspiration for his Americana style paintings from vacationing with his wife. The couple has traveled extensively to New England and the Carolina’s.

Vacation photos have also given the self taught painter a great backdrop to create scenes that truly are regional and uniquely American.

Since much of his work is inspired through realism, there are a number of paintings people may recognize through rural Ohio travels.

“I’ve done several things in Marion County and Delaware County, also Holmes County and around Loudonville,” said Fought.

The Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery will host a free public artist reception for the exhibit “Landscapes and More,” Monday, July 26, 4-6:30 p.m.

Art from “The Mandalas” by Barbara Stover, which features handmade quilted works of concentric circles and geometric patterns, will be on display August 17-September 8. The gallery will also host a free public artist reception for “The Manadalas” on Monday, August 23, 4-6:30 p.m.

Those in attendance at summer gallery receptions will have the opportunity to meet the artist and ask questions about his or her inspiration, the meaning behind the work and other points of interest. Light refreshments will be served.

Gallery curator Sarah Weinstock and the campus art department will soon release information regarding upcoming exhibits on displays throughout the 2010-2011 academic year.

The Wayne & Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery is located off of Morrill Hall lobby, 1465 Mount Vernon Avenue, Marion. The gallery is open to visitors Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
