Announcement
Basic human needs are the focus of the 2009 Marion Community Foundation grants program. Applications are now available for the nearly $300,000 Marion Community Foundation will award to charitable Marion organizations and projects. Applications are due to the Foundation by July 29.
“In view of the harsh effects of the recent economic crisis on Marion County families, Marion Community Foundation will give preference to grant applicants whose projects address one or more priority areas,” says Foundation president Bradley C. Bebout. The priority areas include: housing assistance, utility bill assistance, job training and employment services, consumer debt and budget counseling, and foreclosure mediation and resolution.
Unique this year is a Staffing Assistance Grant utilizing federal stimulus funds and offered in partnership with Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission. This grant will provide a staff person, who will be “awarded” to one or more local non-profit agencies to assist with program operations.
Seeing the spirit of cooperation at work, Bebout says, “This is a great demonstration of trust on the part of Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission to allow Marion Community Foundation to assist with the selection of this very special grant opportunity.”
Proposals for the staffing assistance grant, which will include all associated employee overhead expenses and benefits, will be accepted as part of MCF’s annual grants program. This non-cash grant would be made to nonprofit organizations for a temporary loan of a program generalist. Priority will be given to programs in the areas of nutrition, health care, employment, and housing. The program generalist would be an employee of Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission but made available to the grantee organization on a part-time or full-time basis to assist the grantee organization in the delivery of charitable services in Marion County. The grantee organization will provide training and daily supervision of the program generalist. Applications for this staffing assistance grant must include: proposed duties, job description and specific work hours and duration of employment of the program generalist, complete descriptions of the programs on which the program generalist will be working, and an explanation of how the staffing assistance grant will promote the organization’s mission and serve the Marion County community.
In addition to the grants targeted for basic human services, MCF also has several grants available for any charitable purpose and some focused on specific fields of interest. Specific grants are available to address the health care needs of the community in general and the treatment or prevention of arthritis, Parkinson’s Disease, and blindness or vision impairment, in particular. With the addition of the Helen Cunningham Handicapped Fund to MCF’s portfolio, grants are also available for programs that promote the general welfare and recreation of persons with disabilities and that provide assistance for handicapped individuals of Marion County to become “handicapable.”
Applicants to MCF’s grants program must have 501(c)3 nonprofit status or equivalent. Grant applications require detailed background information on the applicant’s organization, a full description of the project or program, and specific details of budget, publicity, and related matters of the project. A full outline of the information required is available on MCF’s website at www.marioncommunityfoundation.org. Conversely, applicants may submit a simplified application for the Foundation’s Mini-Grants Program, which provides awards of $2,500 or less.
On June 24, Marion Community Foundation will be conducting a free and voluntary workshop to help applicants formulate project ideas and prepare grant applications. There will be a review of the grant application form, the mini-grant application form, the new staffing assistance grant, and the overall grants process. Organizations intending to submit grant applications to Marion Community Foundation are encouraged to attend. The workshop will be held at Marion Community Foundation, located inside the Stengel-True Museum, 504 South State Street and begin at 1:30 p.m.
The 2009 Grants Committee includes chairman Dr. Henry Heinzmann and members Anne Davy, Dr. Scott Yancey, Vi Griffith Ward, Ron Cramer, Susie Brown and Pastor Doug Ford. The committee will review applications, conduct applicant interviews, and make recommendations to MCF’s full Board of Trustees, who will make award decisions by the end of August.
Applications for Marion Community Foundation’s 2009 grants program are available from the Foundation’s offices, 504 S. State St. Applications can also be downloaded from www.marioncommunityfoundation.org. Questions may be addressed by calling 387-9704 during standard business hours.
