The Ohio State University at Marion
Five Nights on Campus is pleased to present Celebrate the Season, Tuesday, December 2, 7:30 p.m., in Morrill Hall Auditorium.
This Five Nights on Campus holiday extra features a host of seasonal classics. Performing will be Ohio State Marion's University Chorus; the campus based contemporary a cappella group InChant; the River Valley High School String Quartet; percussionist David Johnston; instrumentalist William Swihart; and pianists Merrill Cooper Bender and John Holsinger.
The featured group performing at Celebrate the Season is the Ohio State Marion University Chorus. The University Chorus is a selected group of mixed voices which studies and performs an extensive repertoire of choral literature. It is made up of undergraduate non-music majors. At least one major performance is scheduled each quarter. University Chorus is under the direction of John Holsinger.
Holsinger is a graduate of both Pleasant High School and The Ohio State University. He has over 24 years of service as a music educator in Ohio's public schools, including stints in Marion, Crawford, and Richland counties. He has studied piano and organ extensively and has served as organist for Prospect Street United Methodist Church and Epworth United Methodist Church in Marion, as well as St. John's Lutheran Church in New Washington. Holsinger currently serves as Director of Music for Jerome United Methodist Church in Plain City, and he is very active in Marion's musical community. He was recently selected to direct the Marion County Honors Choir for the Harry Alexander Music Festival. He is also a proud member of TBDBITL Alumni Band and had the honor of dotting the "I" with The Ohio State University Marching Band.
University Chorus is accompanied by Merrill Cooper Bender. Cooper Bender has been an independent piano teacher in Marion, Ohio, for over 35 years. She began studying the piano at the age of four and continued through college at Bowling Green State University. As an adult, she studied with Paul Strouse of Columbus/Waverly, Ohio. She has continued her involvement in music education and performance throughout the United States and Europe. She gave a solo performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1995 and a solo/ensemble recital in Columbus, Ohio, with her sister in 2000.
Tickets for Celebrate the Season are available in advance by calling Bronwen Babich at 740-725-6341 or at the door. Tickets are $10 general admission, $9 seniors, $8 Marion campus faculty and staff, and $4 for students. The OSU Marion County Alumni Club will serve light refreshments after the show. Concert patrons are also encouraged to visit the Wayne & Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery before and after the concert. The gallery is currently hosting an exhibition featuring the work of the OSU Photography Department entitled, OSUFOTO2008. The exhibit will be on display through December 4, 2008.
