Online schools are unique. For the most part, instruction is delivered online to students while they are at home. So students get a lot of one-on-one attention from their teachers...but they don't get to see them in person very often.
Tabatha Varner, Executive Director of the Marion City Digital Academy (MCDA), wanted to give the students (and their families) the opportunity to spend more quality time with their teachers, as well as other students, in person. And MCDA Art Day was born.
"I took the idea to our director, Ray Haines, who also happens to be the Exalted Ruler at the Marion Elks Lodge 32. The Elks purchased the pumpkins which the kids decorated that day, and they provided each student with a packet that included drug awareness bookmarks, comic books, crayons, and colored pencils," said Varner.
"We had our first Art Day on October 20th, and it was a great hit. The students also decorated Halloween cookies and played bingo for prizes (games, water bottles, jump ropes, candy and gum) some of which the Elks Lodge donated as well. We invited all of our K - 8 MCDA students, along with their parents and siblings. We had about 20 people participate in this inaugural Art Day event," noted Haines.
