The Ohio State University at Marion
The Ohio State University at Marion invites the community to the Infinity Restaurant in the historic Harding Hotel, 267 West Center Street, downtown Marion, for a free monthly community dialogue on science entitled, Science Café, Tuesday, October 28, 7 p.m.
The restaurant will have plenty of fine food and drink for sale. The discussion begins at 7:00 p.m., but patrons are invited to arrive earlier for dinner. Science Cafés feature a lively conversation with a scientist about current science topics. At a Science Café you can learn about the latest issues in science, chat with a scientist in plain language, meet new friends, speak your mind, and talk with your mouth full. The overriding goal of Ohio State Marion’s Science Café is to overcome reluctance to learning about science and to make science less mysterious.
This month’s café guest is Fritz Scheuren, Vice-President for Statistics at the National Opinion Research Center, University of Chicago. Scheuren will host a discussion entitled, “Trust but Verify in Elections”.
According to Scheuren, The complexity of U.S. Elections is mind boggling, even setting aside considerations of intentional tampering. The interest of the lay public is in having the outcome they want and having it be accepted.
Of course, in a world of winners and losers, the best that can be hoped for is that the outcome is seen as fair, or that, in "statistical speak," the margin of error is smaller than the margin of difference.
Even in a well run election operation, like that in Marion County or Franklin County, there are many challenges to fairness that could call into question whether the quality was good enough to have the candidates accept the outcome. The 2008 election will be no different in this respect and will have special challenges, notably an expected very high turnout by many first time voters.
So what to look for? -- And how to make a personal difference -- maybe even this time? Come to Science Café and let's learn from each other. Additional information can be found at these websites: http://www.marion.ohio-state.edu/sciencecafe or http://library.osu.edu/sites/sel/sciencecafe/
