Staff History Business Resources Donor Information
Marion CAN DO! started in 1993 as an idea by a group of citizens who believed
it was time for the community to focus its resources on rejuvenating an economy
that, in the not-so-distant past, was on life support. Unemployment in Marion
County in 1981 reached 23.1 percent. Many major employers had downsized
significantly or left town altogether. The national economy was retrenching and
Marion needed to catch up.
Today, however, Marion's story is entirely different from the early 1980s. Old-style industries are being updated or replaced with modern, efficient manufacturing and service businesses. This is not a process that happens by itself. Companies need to be courted. Development plans need to be made and refined. CAN DO! is committed to continuing the process of "re-engineering" the community by developing attractive industrial sites and working with property owners, local and state government, and corporate citizens to help build the new Marion that will thrive in the twenty-first century.
