Why Support CAN DO? Why should corporations already located in Marion County care about attracting more investment here? Won't new companies just steal workers from existing firms? Those are valid questions. In the long run, a healthy economy is good for all concerned. More job opportunities mean more people moving into an area. More companies encourage improvements to infrastructure--a benefit to all firms located here. A stronger industrial base brings more retail opportunities and more options in dining, culture and recreation.
Would you rather run your company in a community that is struggling to survive or one that is vibrant and thriving? During its history, Marion has experienced both conditions. During the first half of this century, Marion was a bustling, busy community. Through much of the second half, that wasn't the case. Today, we're in the building process--replacing aging plants and industrial infrastructure with companies on the upswing of their growth curves--companies that will serve the community well into the next century. Let's continue the momentum!
Within the past few years, CAN DO! obtained a $750,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Development, allowing the community to acquire the property that is now being developed as Marion's Dual Rail Industrial Park. That effort resulted in several new industries to move into Marion, creating several hundred new jobs. In fact, the recruiting efforts for the LTV Copperweld plant to fill 144 jobs brought in over 1200 applicants from all over Central Ohio!
Unlike industries of the past, new-generation plants won't employ thousands of people at a time. Most new plants employ a few hundred at best, taking advantage of modern automation and robot technology. Marion needs to acquire more of these growing companies to solidify our economic base.
The spirit of cooperation continues to grow. The city, county, townships and state of Ohio are working together as never before in support of the Marion area's economic development efforts.
Building on the base we've established, Marion County's future looks bright. We have answers to the needs of many kinds of industry. But, while the national economy remains strong, it is important to attract investment to this community when companies are growing and expanding. We need to build a strong base to blunt the effects of an inevitable slow-down.
Your investment in CAN DO! is really an investment into Marion County's future. By supporting this organization, you are making sure Marion County stays competitive with the thousands of other communities vying for economic development. You are doing your part to insure Marion County's future remains bright.
